Homework 9/9

Facebook first came onto the scene in 2004 when Mark Zukerburg, a sophomore at Harvard University, created the site. The site was a hit instantly. First, it was only open to Harvard students for about a month and then it became available to other colleges and then after about a year it became readily available for anyone over the age of 13. Now Facebook has over 250 million active users and 120 million people log into their accounts each day. It has become such a hit that practically everyone I know from aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters, grandmas and grandpas, and all of my friends have an account. Everyone now has a way to connect with each other all over the world.

Facebook is one of the hottest blog type websites out there. Google and Yahoo! both offered to purchase the company for large amounts of money, but Facebook was not for sale. Microsoft along with Pay-Pal co-founder Peter Thiel and Hong Kong billionaire Li-Ka-shing have made large investments into the company. Facebook makes their money through annoying advertising that shows up on your wall or your home page. People can share pictures, look for jobs, write and comment on other’s walls, blog, form groups, meet new people, start forums, Facebook chat, keep up with others social activities, and remember other’s birthdays. These are just a few of the features that Facebook offers. Everyday, feactures are being added and some instantly become the hit of the virtual world. The website is known all around the world, it is the second largest behind MySpace.

Personally, I am on my Facebook account atleast once a day. I know some people that practically addicted to it, but this is not a bad thing. Facebook has given the world a way to communicate. People can get to know other people through what each person puts on their wall and this can come in handy say if you are attending college for the first time and you want to get to know people. It has become very important and somewhat of a staple in society. Businesses can each out to potential employees and they can promote their business through Facebook. It has become very versitile in they way that you can you use it. This new technology has been a change for the better and it can hardly be ignored when everyone is using it. Blogs are starting to become more and more popular and I think they will continue to get bigger and bigger in years to come.

You mention that the adds are annoying, do you feel that they are effective? I know that facebook uses information in your profile to specifically target the user. Is this a violation of personal information or an effective form of advertisement?

When thinking about facebook, an all in one stop for communicating, do you feel that it affects the way in which people communicate face-to-face?
