In this first article done by CBS news they say that we shouldn’t bail out the auto industry. It reports that Obama and the Democrats are psuhing for the bailout, but everyone else in the White House does not want to see this happen. The article also says that the Bush administration sees the $700 billion rescue as an emergency measure to save the financial sector on the grounds that finance is a utility and that no government would let the electric companies go under and leave the country without power. The article also talks about the amount of unemployed citizens sky rocketing upwards to 5 million along with mortage closures and buiness failures. It says that once you go and bailout this industry what other industry will be at the door next asking for money to be bailed out themsleves. Also, that by saving the auto industry it means saving them from bankruptcy and we saw through the airline companies that even the company is bankrupt it can still run smoothly. If the government was to bailout the auto industry it would burn up tens of billions of dollars and yet companies would still continue to fail. I don’t think this article was as persuasive as the other article. Yes it did provide facts, but the fact of people losing jobs and not being able to support their families isn’t right. As we did see though the government bailed out the auto industry and they still filed for bankruptcy so they basically wasted a lot of money on nothing, but from this article I don’t think that it was as persuasive as the other one and didn’t make me want to not bail out the industry.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/11/14/opinion/main4604147.shtml

This second article is from Biztimes and it talks about the car industry needing to be bailed out. The article states that the car indurty is the backbone of American manufacturing. It also that the manufacturing is critical to the nations national defense which i dont realy understand how that can be. But the article goes on to say that we need to bailout the indutry to save 3 million family supporting jobs and a million retirees would lose their health care coverage. They use current examples to show the effects of the auto industry turning down jobs like in Janesville Wisconsin and it now has the highest unemployment rate in the country. It says that people aren,t buying cars because which is the second biggest purchase a family makes because credit is not available on reasonable terms. The companies have obviously been mismanaged as well. I think this article does a better job of persuading people to the side of we needing to bail out the auto industry. Obviously this article is in favor for it because of the jobs it will save and that is what people care about expecially those who work for the big 3 auto companies. The use of facts I think is what helps this article to successfully steer people towards the side of bailing out the industry. When you throw around a lot of those big numbers it makes the article solid and facts are crucial to persuading people one way or the other unless you are a smooth talker. I definitely think this article is more persuasive then the CBS news article.Even though we should have not bailed out the industry and made them file for bankruptcy after the fact this article persuaded me that we should.

Everyone knows Starbucks or is familiar with what they do. They sell different brews of coffee from all around the world giving them a high class feel, currently, on their website they are boasting an Indonesian brew. All of this gives Starbucks and elegant sense and for high end coffee, but at a reasonable price and always putting the customers first. Walking into the Starbucks uptown, I got the feel that they wanted me to get. Yellow and green covered the walls with wood panels that add a sense of elegance. In the store there was a total of 4 tables, giving me a feeling of not being welcomed. On the walls there were pictures of Kenya, Panama, and Italian Roast showing the different world brews. All of the workers were wearing a specific uniform that signifies a business. Everything in the store was neatly organized and seemed like their was a purpose to every single detail.

Not knowing much about Kofenya I wasn’t that surprised by the look it looked similar to Starbucks with different colors painted on the wall, but the difference was that when I walked into Kofenya I felt a welcoming feeling and a sort of homey feeling. Kofenya was a lot bigger an their were a lot more people in there. There was a lot of seating which was being occupied by people doing everything from talking to studying. It seemed less business like because the workers weren’t wearing any specific uniform and with a black and white stage. You could tell as soon as you walk in that there is a noticeable difference in feel in the store.

The major difference I think between Starbucks and Kofenya is the way they are run. Starbucks is one of top businesses around and you can tell by the way they are run. It is very professional, you can tell by they way the stores are set up with merchandise in the front and different bags of coffee for sale. All of the workers look the same and Starbucks is known for its service and its pledge to put people first. That is what they are known for and they are hard to compete with. Kofenya definitely feels comfortable kind of a like home. They aren’t as business like as Starbucks. Since it is a local spot it tends to have a more tradition or local stuff like the Roethlisberger jersey in the back. Starbucks is good for fast, quick service oh high quality coffee. It gives you the experience of coffee, but Kofenya gives you an experience that can’t be matched if you are looking for a place to sit down and enjoy coffee over a nice conversation.

Ethos- Head football coach, been there before

Pathos- Take a moment, I want you to look each other in the eyes, put each other in your hearts forever, think about Boobie Miles your brother, he would die to be out there, put him in your hearts

Logos- Have been playing the game for 10 years, two quarters left for some it is the last two quarters ever

It was effective to me because i can relate to that type of situation playing sports in high school

I found it interesting how many ways rhetoric can be used and how it can be received if put into the right order. It all depends on how you order your facts and thoughts and how you present them. I think it is interesting how the way you something by toning it down to the audience you are speaking to can affect the audience. I also thought it was interesting to read about how rhetoric created certain things like getting us out of the Cuban Missile Crisis. People can get themselves out of pretty much anything if they know how to talk and persuade their audience like Hitler did years ago.

Value- interviewing for a job, we would talk a lot different than if we were talking to our friends

Reason- presenting a project to a class

Large, mature tress outline and hide away the marching band with their lush, green leaves. Rows and rows of students and coaches fill the field like soldiers marching into battle. They play their instruments in sweet harmony to create traditional music along with current hits of today. Their instruments glow in the light of the hot sun. Everyday it seems that they are out their practicing hours upon hours during the day and sometimes even in the night. Their hard work shows as bead of sweat drop down their faces and the sweat covers their shirts, while most of the drummers aren’t even wearing shirts. The band director is shouting out orders as the band members listen as if it were life or death.

Facebook first came onto the scene in 2004 when Mark Zukerburg, a sophomore at Harvard University, created the site. The site was a hit instantly. First, it was only open to Harvard students for about a month and then it became available to other colleges and then after about a year it became readily available for anyone over the age of 13. Now Facebook has over 250 million active users and 120 million people log into their accounts each day. It has become such a hit that practically everyone I know from aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters, grandmas and grandpas, and all of my friends have an account. Everyone now has a way to connect with each other all over the world.

Facebook is one of the hottest blog type websites out there. Google and Yahoo! both offered to purchase the company for large amounts of money, but Facebook was not for sale. Microsoft along with Pay-Pal co-founder Peter Thiel and Hong Kong billionaire Li-Ka-shing have made large investments into the company. Facebook makes their money through annoying advertising that shows up on your wall or your home page. People can share pictures, look for jobs, write and comment on other’s walls, blog, form groups, meet new people, start forums, Facebook chat, keep up with others social activities, and remember other’s birthdays. These are just a few of the features that Facebook offers. Everyday, feactures are being added and some instantly become the hit of the virtual world. The website is known all around the world, it is the second largest behind MySpace.

Personally, I am on my Facebook account atleast once a day. I know some people that practically addicted to it, but this is not a bad thing. Facebook has given the world a way to communicate. People can get to know other people through what each person puts on their wall and this can come in handy say if you are attending college for the first time and you want to get to know people. It has become very important and somewhat of a staple in society. Businesses can each out to potential employees and they can promote their business through Facebook. It has become very versitile in they way that you can you use it. This new technology has been a change for the better and it can hardly be ignored when everyone is using it. Blogs are starting to become more and more popular and I think they will continue to get bigger and bigger in years to come.

Lynn Staeheli defines place in many ways throughout the writing, not only the basic definition, but place as context, place as a cultural or socail location, place as a physical location or site, place as a socail process and many other ways. I never would have thought about thinking about a place in so many ways. I think a place as simply just somewhere you can go as a physical location. When she talks about women in Western citied being out of place because they are involved in industry, politics, and commerce I guess i never really considere that being out of place because although women have not been completely equal in America they have had more opportunities here then they have over in other parts of the world. So when I see a woman in a high powered job I dont consider them being “out of place” because in my lifetime it isn’t uncommon here in America. Place obviously has more than one meaning, but I would have never known if I didn’t sit down to think about it. The word seems like such an easy concept to undersand, but there is more than meets the eye.

1. Bright and early in the morning single file band members march like soldiers in a green, lush field. Some wearing vibrant colored shirts and some not wearing a shirt at all. Sweat glistening off their foreheards as they work hard to perfect their piece. All different kinds of people girls and boys ranging from all different heights and sizes. You can see the sun glisten off their instruments glaring into the eyes of the coaches and people passing by. Many people stop to look and some go away being won over by the band. They continued to play tucked in between the opening of the large mature trees.

2. Sounds- All different kinds of beautifully crafted instruments all with different sounds making heavenly music. Listening to the coaches yelling out a bullhorn things such as, “we need to be better” and “this is a college marching band” and “do it again”. Listening closely you can here the moans and groans from the exhausted band half of them still sleeping. Over all the instruments you can here the roar of the drums like thunder during a storm. You can hear the sweet noise from the percussion section breaking in between the drums. The overall sound makes me think of every other marching band I have ever heard before. My ears I guess arent sophisticated to know the difference in the music.

7. The mood of band appears to be tired, but they seem to be enjoying themselves. But just like in society everyone seems to be in their own clique. The drummers hang out with drummers and so on. Everyone seems to be on edge because they are not comfortable with each other just yet. Plus they are all tired because they woke up at the crack of dawn to practice, waking up all of the dorms around them. There also seems to be a joy in the air because everyone is anxious for their first performance. The coaches seem to be a little worried because they are hoping to get the piece pefect for when the time comes.

8. Watching this reminds me of high school years and the football games on friday nigths. It also reminds me of the times when the band played at our basketball games in high school. It reminded me of all the pre game meals and the pre game meetings. All of these memories came to me because of the band. It also reminded me of going to Ohio State games and seeing the band run out onto the field.
